The bridge carrying the A640 New Hey Road over the M62 near junction 22 (Outlane) remains in single-lane running. This is due to significant corrosion, which means that the bridge is unable to safely open to two lanes of traffic.

We're still monitoring the structure every three months to ensure there are no critical signs of potential structural failure. We can continue to maintain single lane running to normal traffic, however, the traffic management will need to stay in place until a permanent solution for the structure is implemented, which is likely to be 2027 at the earliest. In the future, we may need to enforce a further weight restriction to keep the bridge safe to use.

We’re now looking into longer-term options. These include further localised strengthening works to maintain a weight limit of 44 tonnes ahead of a permanent replacement of the entire bridge.

We will share further updates, including any changes to weight restrictions, timescales for further works and any plans for replacement of the structure, as they are confirmed.

We need to resurface the A66 Neasham roundabout and the A66 Morton Palms roundabout. We'll also be resurfacing the A66 approaches to both roundabouts.

To do this work safely we'll be using a variety of traffic management control measures including traffic lights with convoy running and some road closures with diversions.

There will also be a mandatory reduction of the speed limit to 40mph for the duration of the work.

Some of this work will be noisy and we apologise in advance for any disruption caused.

We’re:

  • refurbishing joints on the M1 (upper deck) and A631 (lower deck) at Tinsley Viaduct
  • replacing existing 50mph repeater signs with roundels and road markings on the A631.

Our work will continue until summer 2026.

The bridge carrying Greenland Lane over the M18, between junctions 6 (Waterside) and 7 (Langham), remains closed to motorised vehicles and is unfortunately not expected to be able to reopen for at least two years.

This is due to complex structural defects which mean we need to close it to motorised traffic for everyone’s safety until 2027 at the very earliest. The bridge is still safe for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians to use.

We’re progressing a detailed structural assessment to establish its load capacity and enable us to find out the next steps we need to take, which could include one of the following options:

  • Repair the structure
  • Prop the structure to allow it to remain open
  • Demolish and replace the bridge with a new one entirely

We'll establish a course of action and share updates as soon as they are available.

We understand that this closure is causing disruption to regular road users in the area, especially with other roadworks taking place within the area. We liaise with the local authority regularly to ensure as little disruption caused as possible. Please be assured, we're doing everything we can to resolve the issues and either safely reopen or replace the bridge as soon as we're able to.

Diversion routes

During the closure, traffic is being diverted via Greenland Lane, Johnny Moor Long Lane, Moorends Road, North Common Road, Selby Road and Thorne Road.

We're replacing 60m of existing concrete safety barrier and reprofiling the existing central reserve cross-section on the A1077(M).

We'll work over three consecutive weekend closures. Each closure will begin on Friday night at 9pm and run until 5am on the following Monday morning.
