A47 King’s Lynn to Swaffham safety improvements
Last year, we carried out safety improvement work on the A47 between the Hardwick Roundabout in King’s Lynn and Swaffham. This year we’ll be working on bus stops, installing more signs and extra road markings.

Work starts soon
We plan to complete our A47 upgrade work between King’s Lynn and Swaffham over around 12 weeks, starting on Monday 26 February 2024.
Work phases
To reduce impact on the local community, we will keep our roadworks to the smallest possible area needed to safely do the work.
However, we will need to have road closures in three locations on the A47:
- Hardwick Roundabout to School Road in Middleton
- Station Road, Middleton to Walton Road in East Winch
- Walton Road, East Winch to Norfolk Woods Resort in Pentney.
Road closures
We will work overnight between 8pm and 6am, weather conditions permitting.
Closure Date Station Road, Middleton to Walton Road, East Winch Monday 26 Feb to Friday 22 March for around four weeks Hardwick Roundabout to School Road, Middleton Monday 25 March to Friday 19 April for around four weeks Walton Road, East Winch to Norfolk Woods Resort, Pentney Monday 22 April to Friday 17 May for four weeks
Diversions
The strategic diversion route will be the same for all three areas.
Local traffic will still be able to use the A47 except through the locations listed above.
Strategic diversion
A47 eastbound diversion from Kings Lynn
Eastbound traffic will be diverted from Hardwick Roundabout, Kings Lynn via the A10, A134 and the A1122 before re-joining the A47 at A1122/Swaffham Road Roundabout.
A47 westbound diversion from Swaffham
Westbound traffic will be diverted from A1122/Swaffham Road Roundabout via the A1122 and A10, before re-joining the A47 at Hardwick Roundabout, Kings Lynn.
Project information
Last year, we carried out safety improvement work on the A47 between Hardwick Roundabout in King’s Lynn and Swaffham. As part of this work, we:
- upgraded nine pedestrian crossings
- built new footpaths in Middleton
- improved kerbs, completed minor resurfacing and refreshed road markings, road studs (cat’s eyes) and laid anti-skid road surfacing.
- improved the safety of several laybys and side road junctions.
- enhanced biodiversity at Hardwick Roundabout.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t complete all of our planned work due to the weather, as well as materials and supply chain issues.
We will be returning to the area to:
- upgrade the bus stops on the A47 in East Winch
- instal electrical signs and more standard road safety signs.
- add new road markings throughout the area.
East Winch bus stop improvements
Last year, when we planned to improve the bus stops currently located on A47 Lynn Road, we received feedback from local residents and stakeholders about our suggested design solutions.
Based on the feedback we received, we have updated this design to include:
- improvements to kerbs and tactile paving at bus boarding areas and resurfacing the footway (pavement).
- cantilever bus shelters, including screening to prevent viewing into adjacent houses
- informal pedestrian crossings
- improvements to drainage at the eastbound bus stop.
Constructing these bus stops will not require access onto any adjacent land.
